How Citizens Can Practise Duties Daily

TL;DR You can practise fundamental duties in daily life in small, practical ways: respect the Flag and Anthem, keep public spaces clean, teach children about the Constitution, and take part in community and civic actions. This guide gives simple steps.

Respect the Constitution and national symbols

  • When the National Anthem is played, stand in respect. Treat the National Flag with care (e.g. do not let it touch the ground, dispose of worn flags properly).
  • Talk to your family or friends about what the Constitution means — rights and duties.

Promote harmony and dignity

  • In your neighbourhood and workplace, treat everyone with respect. Reject language or behaviour that insults anyone on the basis of religion, caste, or gender.
  • Support the dignity of women; speak up against practices that harm or demean them.

Protect the environment and public property

  • Do not litter; use bins. Where possible, save water and electricity.
  • Do not damage public property (e.g. buses, parks, government buildings). Report vandalism if you see it.

Education and excellence

  • If you have children between 6 and 14, ensure they go to school. The Constitution makes it a duty to provide education to your child in this age group.
  • Encourage curiosity and respect for facts — the “scientific temper” the Constitution speaks of.

Take part in civic life

  • Vote in elections. Take part in gram sabha or local meetings when you can.
  • When you have a grievance, use official channels (e.g. grievance portals, RTI) in a clear, respectful way — that is both right and duty.
